Often I thought that one day the light and shadows would be just right for me to take a picture of it. Well, while taking a break to walk around campus, I happened to have my camera and the light was just right. I stopped, took a couple of pictures, and here it is. BAM This one corner of Briggs Hall fascinates because the shadows seductively highlight the building’s brutalist lines and texture. I am also drawn in by the shadows contradictory emphasis of the corner’s symmetry even as they also create a touch of playfully dark asymmetry that make me stop and wonder about what I see. Or think I see. Or do not see? As I walked around the still unfinished Salesforce Tower/Transbay Transit Facility, I was impressed by the wrap around metal skin; I wanted to capture the astounding lightness of the metal “lace” (as I still think of it) at least once. That metal “lace” looked light yet dramatic to me; although it is light and airy, I saw the possibilities of visual drama and visceral contrast. The Salesforce Tower/Transbay Transit Terminal was still under construction, but I walked around it enough, while making sure I did not cross the yellow tape that demarcated “danger zones,” to capture several photos. Motels, at least to me, from what I have seen in the US, are also usually tacky echoes of the US past. However, turns out Motel One is a chain of high end hotels in Europe. Oh well. Anyway, on my second trip to Berlin, I went to the Museum für Fotografie and C/O Berlin in Amerika Haus, which are a few blocks from each other, because both had photography exhibitions I was interested in seeing. To get there I took a double decker bus (my first time) and sat upstairs and in the very front seat, looking out like a puppy on their first car ride. On the way to the museums I saw lots of cute parks, small businesses, and residential buildings. I figured the museums were in an area that was cute, maybe touristy, with lots of trees and open space. Then, not so much open space. Once at my destination, I found myself surrounded by beautiful hotels, a large mall, art galleries, and a beautiful church, with the Berlin zoo nearby. To me, though, this Motel One Berlin’s architecture stood out (no pun intended) in an elegantly defiant manner. I loved it. I took a couple of pictures of it with my old Nikon D50 and loved the results. Later, in March, 2018, returning from a trip to South Florida for my mother’s 91st birthday (yep, 91 and still in pretty good shape), I again was awestruck by the gorgeousness of this structure in the late afternoon light and again I took several photos of this building, letting my eyes and mind take flight, just as the Tower itself seems to do. I was fortunate enough to go there both on the day before my birthday (with a photographer acquaintance) and then on my birthday, the second time alone. A couple of days later, without any plans or destinations in mind, I explored Downtown LA and took photos of some awesome buildings, including Frank Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert Hall, which I had not seen before. I fell in love with its voluptuous minimalism. I spent about 45 minutes just walking, gawking, and photographing. Four years later, I went back and took more photos of this architectural jewel, then while processing the files, I played around with the colors. Soon as I arrived in Stuttgart, I left my bags in my hotel room and walked around the area where my hotel was located. There was, admittedly, not much to see, but this building did catch my eye. It is a couple of blocks from an expressway and there were hillside grapevines behind the high speed corridors. Who knew that Stuttgart is surrounded by often steep, hillside vineyards that somehow blend into the urban region? Anyway, this building’s sharply curved form, its hard angled surfaces with fluid patterns that contrasted and highlighted the swirling clouds? How could I resist taking a couple of pictures of this otherwise utilitarian office building? While on Grant Avenue, which is the more touristy, souvenir shop-filled central street of SF’s Chinatown, I saw this shop. I was attracted to the sign, of course, and the colors and shapes, but what struck me was that there was not one human in sight, not for the couple of minutes that gave me the chance to capture several photos (just in case). Given the street’s popularity and the fact it was a Sunday, I was pleasantly surprised I was able to get a moment’s respite from the crowds. We stopped at this metro station on my second day in Munich, on our way to the 1976 Olympic Park and BMW World. Funny story: The four of us were carrying our cameras in hand most of the time (did I not mention that we met because of our love of photography?) and three of us were often taking pictures of the architecture, while the fourth member of our group kept talking philosophy and humanity and arts and wondering WTF we found interesting enough to photograph in the local human environments. He loves landscape photography and is great at portraiture (and everything else, really) but he just did not get why modern, stark, human-made structures seduced us visually. Anyway, we all had way too much fun together. So much fun, I plan to go back, if they are willing to put up with me again. About the Westfeiedhof U-Bahn: I was mesmerized. It is in the alley where the University Mall shops’ garbage and other debris is dumped in containers. The alley is not smelly or anything disturbing; it is just a bit messy and not pretty. That said, lotsa times when I was walking to the store, I saw this section of the wall and thought, “This is so cool,” but I did not have my camera with me, so… …meh. I only had about 20 minutes. Thankfully, while I was there, the structure’s section that was best accessible for photographing was bathed in great light, light that captured reflections of the sky and lawn and brick wall. The sense of motion was distinct, different from Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert Hall, which I fell in love with a few years earlier. Whereas the Disney is a set of swooping fields of reflective motion, the Weisman is growing series of interlocking vertical rectangles and curves that climb bright orange horizontal patterned brickwork.
